How Does Arnica Combat Pain?

Arnica montana, aka leopard's bane and wolfsbane, is a member of the sunflower family and has been used to treat both acute and chronic pain for several hundred years. This plant is native to northern Europe and Siberia but has been cultivated in Northern America as well. Topical and oral Arnica can be an effective substitute for common NSAID pain relievers, such as Ibuprofen. The Arnica plant contains Helenalin, a potent small-molecule inhibitor of a vital component of the inflammatory process. Whenever an injury occurs, there is an entire cascade of events that occur on a molecular level within the body, which biology has put into effect as a way to bring our attention to the injury (i.e., pain). When Helenalin inhibits the inflammatory process, the body is able to focus on healing the injury itself, not the accompanied inflammation.

Arnica has several potential uses including the treatment of bruises, sprains, muscle aches, joint pain, inflammation, swelling, and burns. It is important to note that the Arnica plant itself is toxic and if ingested raw or in extremely high concentrations can cause dizziness, tremors, heart irregularities, or death. Extensive external use may cause irritation leading to eczema, peeling or blisters and it is never recommended to use topical Arnica on an open wound. It is also not advised to use either oral or topical Arnica if nursing or pregnant as there is some evidence that it may contribute to miscarriage. In general, it is recommended to avoid this plant if you are sensitive to Arnica or other plants in its family. Though these side effects sound extreme, these only occur with incredibly high volumes of ingestion and homeopathic remedies dilute to a dose where there are no detectable amounts of the actual plant in them. It is always recommended to follow the remedies' dosing instructions and consult with your doctor if you are interested in increasing your dose.

This is a homeopathy remedy that I utilize in my own family often. My husband sustained two herniated discs in his thoracic spine while playing football in high school. In the years following his injury, he was taking Ibuprofen for the pain but did not only get little relief, he also suffered an esophageal rupture that required emergency surgery. This happened because chronic use of Ibuprofen can cause increased acid reflux, which weakens the esophagus over time. Once healed, we decided to try T-Relief oral Arnica as needed with the addition of the topical formula when spasms occurred around his injury. This allowed him to withstand physical therapy and regain the core strength required to support his injury. Six years later, he is able to keep up with our young daughter and works out just as he did as an eighteen-year-old varsity lineman. Whether it's for us or our pets, our family will always reach for T-Relief first for pain management. Please note the links provided below for our go-to choices for this Arnica remedy!
